In their latest “Like Brands, Only Cheaper” ad, Aldi humorously portrays M&S’s Colin as an aggressive party guest at a caterpillar cake gathering, engaging in a scuffle with Cuthbert.
The 30-second commercial showcases Cuthbert alongside other party attendees named Wiggles and Morris, representing Sainsbury’s and Morrisons’ caterpillar cakes, respectively. They express their liking for both Aldi and M&S’s caterpillar cakes.
The price comparison is displayed on the screen, indicating M&S’s cake at £8.50 and Aldi’s at £4.99, right before Colin’s unexpected appearance triggers a commotion.
This advertisement premiered on television on May 1st, following prior teasers Aldi had released on Twitter.
Aldi UK’s marketing director, Jemma Townsend, stated, “What better way to show shoppers’ support of Cuthbert than by having him as the star in the returning Like Brands Only Cheaper series?” She emphasized that Aldi’s exclusive brands are on par with well-known brands, and these advertisements aim to reinforce that message, especially in times when the cost of living is of increasing importance to consumers.
In 2021, M&S initiated a lawsuit against Aldi due to perceived similarities between their respective caterpillar cakes. The dispute ultimately led to an out-of-court settlement, allowing Aldi to continue selling its version. Throughout this legal battle, Aldi playfully taunted M&S on social media with tactics such as promoting Cuthbert’s return to sale on billboard posters placed on vans parked outside M&S stores.
Furthermore, Cuthbert made a cameo appearance in Aldi’s 2021 Christmas advertisement, where he was humorously depicted being led away by police in handcuffs. – Aldi M&S Caterpillar Cake
